If you usually see your bearded dragon open mouth, this article will be very helpful for you. This article will explain and help you understand the open-mouth behavior of bearded dragons and the possible reasons why they are doing it.

There are a lot of possible explanations why your bearded dragon opens its mouth. Here are some of those reasons.

Mistrust

Trust is difficult to develop especially if you haven’t spent much time together with your dragon. When bearded dragons feel irritated or threatened and they got nowhere to run or hide, they show a strong defensive pose as their last resort. This pose is described as having wide-open mouth, beards turning black, body color turning dark, and produces a hissing sound. This behavior is called “Bearding”. If your dragon feels like you are a stranger, then he/she will see you as a threat. This is where this open-mouth behavior can be seen.

Bearding

Bearding is an act that involves the opening of the throat and mouth of a bearded dragon and it can be seen as an act of mating, showing dominance, or aggression. Their ability to puff their throats out and open their mouth is the reason why they are called Bearded Dragons because of the beard-like image that they show.

Yawning

Yes. Even dragons yawn. It is a common behavior that can be seen in many dragons although not all of them know how to yawn. The yawning behavior can be usually seen in bearded dragons when the light is turned on after a day’s rest or after their sleep cycle. Bearded dragons yawn by stretching their beards several times before opening their mouth wide and then it shuts its close immediately after.

Thermoregulation

When basking under the light, bearded dragons tend to open their mouths. Why? This is their way of regulating their body temperature. Bearded dragons need to maintain a body temperature that is within 95-110˚ Fahrenheit and anything in excess won’t be needed. When it is basking under the light and it has already achieved its thermal maximum, they can’t sweat the excess body heat out by other means so they sit and open their mouth to regulate and dissipate its excess body heat. Bearded dragons do this same as why dogs pant.

These are just some of the reasons why you see your bearded dragon with its mouth wide open. Having a bearded dragon can be worrying at times especially if you haven’t understood their behavioral patterns yet but in this case, the opening of mouth can be just because of some external stimuli, their innate ways, and their nature of handling things.
